Coping with Arthritis Pain

Managing arthritis can be challenging, but some home remedies are effective in reducing and easing pains.

Arthritis is one of the most painful and persistent physical conditions affecting American adults today, with current estimates of more than 46 million people currently suffering from some variation of it.  Doctors have, to date, identified more than 100 different types of arthritis.  The two most common types are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.  The former results from natural wear and strain in the body, while the latter stems from inflammation when the body's immune system malfunctions.  The word “arthritis,” is defined as “joint inflammation.”

A joint is a place where two bones meet (such as a knee), and the bones are covered with cartilage, a spongy-type of material which acts as a buffer to absorb the wear and tear of the bones rubbing together. Ligaments, strong strands of tissue, connect bones, keeping the joints in stable positions.  When arthritis sets in the affected area, either in or surrounding a joint, experiences inflammation.  This causes pain, stiffness, and sometimes, difficulty in moving the affected area in a normal fashion.

arthritis remediesWith so many different variations of the disease, innumerable methods have emerged to treat and manage the resulting pain and discomfort.  Many of these are home remedies that, when performed safely and consistently, can help to reduce the pain associated with arthritis.  Make sure you check with your doctor before trying any new pain-relieving medicines or techniques.

Effective Home Remedies for Arthritis Pain Relief

Depending on the type and extent of arthritis that someone has, pain remedies and treatments are wide-ranging and variable in effectiveness.  Conventional treatments most commonly include medications for pain relief and exercise rehabilitation programs targeting the affected area(s).  One of the most challenging aspects of arthritis treatment, though, is learning to live with and manage the pain that results from the disease.  Home remedies, therefore, when performed safely and consistently, can be a great help in that regard.

arthritisAcupuncture has been noted as an acceptable treatment for osteoarthritis.  The ancient Asian practice has shown to effectively reduce pain and increase joint flexibility while also reducing the need for higher doses of pain medication. A second home remedy worth looking into is fish oil.  Taking fish oil supplements has been shown to lessen inflammations and joint stiffness stemming from arthritis.  SAMe, another supplement, is also available over-the-counter and shown to be effective in some arthritis sufferers.  When taking herbal supplements, though, be sure to speak with doctor, as they can interact with other medications you may be taking.  A fourth home remedy that has been recommended is heat treatment, such as from a heating pad rested on an affected area for a duration of time or even long, hot baths.  Weight loss is a fifth recommendation, as extra weight can cause additional strain on the joints.

In addition to these home remedy options, some experts have recommended light to moderate massage in some cases to help lessen and soothe arthritis pains.  Be sure, though, to avoid heavy pressing or deep stimulation massage that may apply too much pressure to the weakened joints.  Foods high in Omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, sardines, and fortified eggs, are recommended to be included in your diet if you suffer from arthritis.  Oils like flaxseed and extra virgin olive oil are also encouraged to aid in reducing inflammation.
